The Best Bookstores Around GreensboroA great book will teach you new things and treat you to amazing adventures with interesting characters. Also, reading is especially important for kids. It can help them learn about the world around them, improve their language skills, and avoid boredom during the COVID-19 pandemic. Whether your favorite subject is bird-watching, travel, science fiction, history, or fantasy, you can find something you’ll love at a local bookstore. Here are some of the best bookstores in the Greensboro, North Carolina, area.

Scuppernong Books

At Scuppernong Books, you can enjoy a cozy atmosphere while browsing their eclectic selection. Different types of book clubs — for science fiction, poetry, and more — meet there. These clubs often have popular authors as guests, and even during the pandemic, these fun events continue over Zoom. If you don’t feel like exploring in person, you can make a purchase online. You can also browse with a mystery box. After you let them know how much you want to spend and which genres and authors you prefer, Scuppernong’s knowledgeable employees will choose some books for you. New or used books and gift certificates are available.

You can also join the Book of the Month Club for kids or adults. Kids will get a free cup of hot chocolate when they pick up their books, and adults will get a glass of wine. Scuppernong Books also offers beer on tap and gourmet coffee and tea. Try the peach oolong tea with apple pieces, marigold flowers, and apricots or the ginger-laced pear tea with mallow flowers, white tea, blackberry leaves, and lemon balm leaves. You can make an appointment for socially distanced browsing Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., but masks are required as part of admission.

McKay’s

This used bookstore has a huge selection, and the inventory is always changing. Along with books, it offers music, video games, movies, board games, musical instruments, and more. During the pandemic, McKay’s provides a curbside kiosk to accept your used books and other items. Inspecting them usually takes about half an hour, and you can browse the store while you wait — as long as you have a mask on.

This outfit offers cash or store credit, but you can opt to keep your stuff if the price isn’t right for you. There are usually boxes of free items outside the store. The company didn’t buy them because of their condition, and the people who brought them in decided not to take them home again. That means you can search for free treasures every time you visit. McKay’s is open every day from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Wonderland Bookshop

Wonderland Bookshop is ideal for kids and features books, e-books, and audiobooks. Two sisters run it together, and they have three dogs that spend time in the store: Lucy, Lulu, and Liesel. You can check out the most popular offerings on the website. At the same time, this store is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for in-person browsing. Hand sanitizer is available, and masks are required.
